Beyond The Hallways: How ERHS Cadets are Training to Make a Difference in The World.

Monday, October 27th, at East Ridge High School, our school newspaper crew took a tour of the building to explore and get a sense of what it was like there. We walked through the halls, the Gym, and the Cafeteria. In the halls, there were many colorful posters and inspirational speeches from role models like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Dolly Parton, and Martin Luther King. We saw different classrooms, vending machines, and different places throughout the school.

We also entered the wrestling building, which is shared by both the high school and middle school. The wrestling coach for our school is Mr. Bird (Coach Bird), who teaches 7th-grade history on the Blue Team. We saw him walking through the high school halls and preparing wrestling mats for the season. We observed the workout instruments they use and the design of the entire room.

Next, our crew took a tour of the high school’s JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) building, which consists of several rooms with offices and a training room. As we made our way to their huge training room, the colonels and sergeants offered to allow us to train with the cadets. Our photographer, Ash Edwards, took photos as the rest of the newspaper crew was placed in formation with the cadets. The cadets helped us prepare for warm-ups in the designated areas.

Two student instructors were leading the teaching positions. We did 5 push-ups, then front and back arm circles, yelling out “1 thousand!, 2 thousand!”, and so on. Then we marched into a tighter formation, in the corner of the room, and the cadets applauded us for joining them in training. With all of this being said, this is the end of our East Ridge High School trip story. Thank you for reading, and we hope you enjoyed!
